Chapter Twelve

Beau

He woke to the rhythmic beeping of an alarm he didn’t remember setting and rolled over to punch it off. Just as he disabled it, and settled in to go back to sleep on what was supposed to be a day off, he read the memo flashing across his phone. “Shit,” he grumbled, sitting up in bed and giving Dax a shake.

“Five more minutes,” Dax mumbled, throwing the pillow over his head. Apparently the alarm had confused him too.

“Get up. We have to go get Tessa.”

“We told Baze eleven.”

“We did, but I forgot I have that meeting today. The one with that new hotel theme park in Utah.”

Dax sat up like a shot rubbing his eyes. “Shit. We have a meeting?”

“I do. Meetings are not your thing. We agreed you would sit this one out, remember?”

“Oh right.” Dax grinned. “Guess I’m going back to bed then.”

“Not hardly,” Beau scoffed. “We promised Tessa a fun playdate and a sleepover. And I’m out of commission for half the day. So that means it’s up to you.”

“Great. We will start at eleven.”

“No.” Beau shook his head. “What do you think the odds are that group of girls didn’t find some way to get in trouble last night?”

Dax scratched his beard as he considered. “Low.”

“Exactly. And we promised Tessa if she got in trouble with Baze, she would get in trouble with us. That’s the rule. So far we haven’t had to enforce it, but I’m fairly certain that streak is about to end. Now, do you want that to fall squarely on your shoulders?”

Dax sighed, swinging his feet over the side of the bed. “Not really.”

“Well then. Get up and get dressed. I’ll send Baze a text and let him know what’s happening.”

Thirty minutes later, they rode the elevator up to the penthouse and knocked on the outer door they’d installed to afford Baze and the girls some privacy. Previously the elevator had opened directly into Baze and Luna’s bedroom.

“Tessa, your Daddies are here,” Baze called over his shoulder when he answered.

It was clear by the surprised confusion on Tessa’s face that Baze had not had time to fill her in. She was still in her jammies and looked like she’d just rolled out of bed but she appeared beside Baze, her face crinkled into a worried frown.

“You said eleven,” she accused. “Baze was making us French toast.”

A breakfast disappointment had not been on the bingo card of things Beau was prepared to deal with. Luckily Dax was unfazed.

“I know, sweetheart, and I’m sorry. But Daddy Beau forgot he had to go out of town for an important meeting today and he just wanted us all to have some time together before he took off. But that means you and I have the whole day to do whatever we want and I’ll make sure that includes a super yummy breakfast. Is that a deal?”

Seemingly appeased, Tessa nodded solemnly. “I just gotta grab my stuff. Is that okay?”

“Of course, sweetheart,” Beau answered, finding his voice again.
